Reference Photo Guidelines

Quality & Authenticity:

While I’m flexible with photo quality—even lower resolution images can work — I believe that the better the photo, the more beautiful the portrait will be. Most importantly, the person in the reference photo should look as natural and true to life as possible. Since I rely solely on your photo (I haven’t met you in person), it’s essential that your key features are clearly recognizable. Different angles can sometimes alter your appearance, so choose a photo that truly represents you.

Not sure which photo to choose?

Feel free to send me multiple photos. I can help you decide which one works best as a reference. Sometimes, one hidden gem is all it takes to capture the perfect moment!

Customization & Adjustments

If your photo only shows your face, I can extend the drawing to include more of your figure, modify the clothing, or adjust the pose. I’m happy to add or remove elements based on your requests to create the perfect representation.

By providing a high-quality, authentic photo, you ensure that your portrait will reflect your true self with accuracy and warmth. If you have any specific requests or need adjustments, please let me know—I’m here to bring your vision to life!

On the table are neatly arranged various materials for drawing pencil portraits: a range of pencils, erasers, sharpeners, blending stumps, and other art tools. These elements create a creative atmosphere, ready for the realization of unique works of art.

High-Quality Materials

I carefully select professional-grade materials to ensure the best quality, detail, and longevity of your portrait.

• Paper: I use 200–250gsm artist-grade paper, specifically chosen for its versatility. It has a balanced texture—not too smooth, yet not too rough—allowing for rich shading, soft blending, and crisp details.

• Pencils: My primary tools are Faber-Castell and Koh-I-Noor professional graphite pencils, known for their smooth application and excellent tonal range. These brands allow me to achieve deep contrasts, soft gradients, and precise detailing.

• Additional Tools: To create highlights and fine details, I use high-precision erasers and blending tools. For deep black areas, I may incorporate carbon-based pencils or special soft graphite blends.

Artist Anneli is drawing a large family portrait in pencil on an open balcony, overlooking the mountains in the town of Digne-les-Bains in France. She looks stunning in a dress with a lovely hairstyle, smiling at the camera, creating a friendly and warm atmosphere.

The Drawing Process

Composition Approval: If your portrait is based on multiple photos, I first create a rough digital composition in Photoshop. This helps visualize the final arrangement, and I consult with you to confirm the positioning of each person before starting the drawing.

Outline: Once the composition is approved, I begin with a light pencil sketch on high-quality paper, carefully mapping out the proportions and main elements of the portrait.

Main Details: I gradually add depth, texture, and shading, bringing the portrait to life with realistic details and smooth transitions.

Final Approval & Delivery: Once the portrait is finished, I send a final photo for your review. If any minor adjustments are needed, I make them before carefully packaging the artwork. After your approval, the portrait is securely packed and shipped to you.
